Jen's Class

Paper & Cloth from the Kitchen Sink with Jen Schultz

Level: for children ages 8-17

Cost: $290 plus a materials fee $15 payable to Jen on the first day

 

 

 

We are super excited to have local artist Jen Schultz join us this summer!  She brings to the studio a whole new adventure in texture with hand-made paper. 

This new camp immerses kids in the art of making paper and dyeing cloth to create their own hand-sewn books and other projects. With kitchen scraps and a little know-how, you can use those compostables to make paper and dye fabric the natural way. Hand-sewing and scissor skills helpful.

Spring Break 2022

Level: Open to kids ages 8-17 

 

Cost: $275 for all 5 days or $75 a day(March break); $190 for all 3 days or $75 a day (April break)  Before and after child care may be arranged for an additional cost. Students bring their own lunch.

 

When: 9:00 am-4:00 pm, March 9-13 (Yinghua Spring Break); 9:00 am-4:00 pm, April 3-5 (Minneapolis Public Schools Spring Break)

 

Enhance your child's spring break with this inspired, 3-day workshop! The project is yet to be determined but we will come up with a fun one with some new twists to enhance the sewing skills. A field trip to Knit and Bolt on Johnson St. is planned which will give the students the opportunity to select fabric of their choice. Before the workshop week is over there will be time for free sewing. So bring your creative spirit!

Cost: $$150/4 week course

When: Thursdays 5:30-7:30  Jan - Feb - Mar (Full)

This project-based course is for any youth curious about how to machine sew.  We always begin with sewing machine operation.  For some this will be a review.  Next, we cover the fundamentals of sewing: preparing fabric, pinning, cutting, seams, and pattern reading,  in addition to some techniques, tips and tricks.

Birthday Party! Kids In Stitches

Level: for children ages 8-17

Cost: $200 up to 5 children and $20 per additional child (for a 2.5-hour party). Limit of eight children ages 8-17.

Our fiber birthday parties are a fun and creative way for kids to celebrate their day with friends. Prior to the event, the birthday child chooses one of our beginner textile projects which they all will make at our studio.

 

The Fiber Works MPLS studio is loaded with all the materials needed to fuel their imaginations and keep their hands engaged. Each child will leave with a piece uniquely their own. Sewing time is about 2 hours with about 30 minutes available for cake and fun chatter. We are located right next to Carma Coffee, so if parents choose to stay, they have a place to relax while we get to work.

 

Family provides cake, juice, any other food stuff, and any additional decorations.  We provide the plates, cups, and utensils.

Sample Week - Adventures in Fiber

Level: Open to kids ages 8-17

Aug. 28 - Sep. 1

Dive into our stash!  We have updated this camp making room for exploration.  A more-relaxed class designed to introduce kids to world of textiles and have the opportunity to try out sewing and knitting and more.

Sew Much Fun (First-Timer Sewing)

Level: Open to kids ages 8-17

 

Cost: $310, plus $35. for fabric (acquired on a field trip) because half the fun of sewing is shopping for fabric!  Before and after child care may be arranged for an additional cost. Students bring their own lunch.

 

When: These week-long camps run 9:00 am-4:00 pm Monday through Friday

Jun. 19 - 23

Discover the sewist in you!  In this project-based camp, we introduce students to the basic techniques of machine sewing.  Working together through a small garment pattern they develop these fundamental skills.  Students will have fun applying their newly found talents to creations of their own imagination.

Sewing: The Next Steps

Level: Open to kids ages 8-17

 

Cost: $310, plus $35 for our fabric shopping trip.  Before and after child care may be arranged for an additional cost. Students bring their own lunch.

 

When: These week-long camps run 9:00 am-4:00 pm Monday through Friday

Jun. 26 - 30 or Aug. 7 -11

 

Now that you understand the basics of sewing, let's take the next steps! In this camp we will expand your sewing skills, continue to learn pattern reading and lay out, improve on straight line stitches, hemming, and more. Students will complete a garment and a small project.  We will have a variety of patterns from which students may choose.  And we always make time for free sewing.

Perfect for anyone who’s taken our Sew Much Fun camp or has worked with a pattern to make a garment.

Stitching Together

Level: Open to kids ages 8-17

This camp is a hybrid between Sew Much Fun and Next Steps.  Designed for the  beginning sewist and the advanced beginner.  Expand your sewing skills with simple patterns, learn pattern reading, and focus on straight line sewing. We will complete a  small project and a garment.  Learn the fundamentals of creative sewing the fun way.

How do we achieve sustainability?  Where does one person even start to make a difference?  Students will bring in garments they no longer wear or do not like the way it fits and together we will come up with creative ways to up-scale, revamp, repurpose them.  We aim to teach students how to begin to make their own wardrobe a sustainable one.   Let’s all work to keep clothes out of the land fill!

#Revamp! Mini Camp

Level: Open to kids ages 8-17

 

Cost: $160. Students bring their own snack.

 

When: This camp runs 9:00 am -1 2:00 noon Wednesday through Friday

 A shortened version of our full camp.  Students will bring in garments they no longer wear or do not like the way it fits and together we will come up with creative ways to up-scale, revamp, repurpose them.

The Evolving Sewist: Advanced Sewing

Level: Open to kids ages 8-17

 

Cost: $310, plus $35-$50 for our fabric shopping trip to our favorite locally owned craft store. Before and after child care may be arranged for an additional cost. Students bring their own lunch.

When: These week-long camps run 9:00 am-4:00 pm Monday through Friday

 August 14 - 18

Ready for your next a challenge?  The objective of this camp is to open that door to independent sewing.  We will guide students in applying their sewing skills and creativity as they progress through a sewing pattern.   We focus on the essential steps involved in working a sewing project from inception to completion. 

This class is designed for students who have previously taken our summer camps or have previous pattern sewing experience.  Deepen your knowledge and skills and discover the freedom to sew it alone!
